“We have to find a way to compete with the gorgeous ad-hoc patchwork styling exemplified by the Kia Optima!”
“Yes, and we should do it with a storied nameplate, leveraging the goodwill behind people who still pine for our golden-era ‘4-door sports car.’”
“Gentlemen, these are all very good points, but we must also maintain the elegant design language of our most beautiful car ever, the Juke.”

Nissan confuses the shit out of me. They make some of the ugliest (maxima) and some of the most boring (titan) designs. But can make pretty things too.

I think the Optima is a decent looking car, but this car is an abomination.

Let’s not sully Kia’s good name by mentioning it in the same thread as modern Datsun.

But... I like it...

Dealer: What’cha want?
Buyer: Like...I don’t know. I want a sports car but with none of the things a sports car is supposed to have? I mean, I know that doesn’t make much sense but-
Dealer: Say no more.

Three cheers for the faux floating C-pillar, the newest chapter in the book of proof that mainstream designers are sycophant copycats.
I wonder about the fleet mix for this car, Maxima has been a staple in the “P” rental car segment for a while now.

but I think nissan had them first on the (doug de)murano

That could be fun to track down. I have always thought the Opel Adam got the ball rolling for mainstream cars, but I could be missing something. The Nissan variants are definitely more flamboyant.

I’m not a big fan of Kia or Hyundai, but I have to admit Kia’s cars are looking better and better every time they re-do one.

Says the person named “fintail”. Probably the oldest chapter in the book of proof that designers are copycats.

Yeah, they have made humongous strides. I tested an Optima with a Manuel before I made my ill-fated Malibu purchase a couple years ago. I really liked it, but the e-brake handle was really loose. That, coupled with the fact that it had been sitting in the lot for months, gave me the impression that some porter had been practicing e-brake turns on it.

Ha, always could have ordered a different one...
If I were shopping a 4 door out of Asia it would be a Mazda 6, but I wouldn’t necessarily be anti-Kia these days.

I’m just going to disagree with calling the Optima ad-hoc and patchwork.
But not the rest of it.

That’s Chapter 5, and hey, those are reversing guides, MB even says so, they wouldn’t tell a fib :)
I think Chapter 1 is all of the Airflow copies.

This was used. Manual Optimas, as you would expect, were a bit of a unicorn.
I really really like the current 6, but that gen had just come out, and was not in my price range at the time.

I don’t know if i’m getting blind since my mom bought a Nissan Versa Note but I like all of Nissan’s designs (except the Versa Sedan) at least they are different and eye catching.

Just saying, people always act like lately is the only time cars have looked similar.

Nobody said anything about lately, that’s why this new lame trend of being different for the sake of being different is a chapter in a book.

Makes sense.
Though this is why I rock the Milan.
